Abstract

Joseph Roth is one of the most important Austrian authors of the 20th century. In his novel Radetzkymarsch, he describes the Danube monarchy and its collapse, representing the basic building blocks as a sign of collapse. The purpose of this study is to examine the symbols of the decadence of the empire in the novel. Here, the symbols of the Trotta family known as one of the most important constants of the Danube monarchy have been compared and the author's artistic work on this subject has been discussed. The Trotta family is known not only as a symbol of decadence, but also as a personal reflection of the collapse of the former Austrian monarchy. In this context, the subject of the study has been examined and discussed in four perspectives. In the first chapter, the Trotta family, Joseph Roth and the Danube monarchy are illuminated in details. The theme of the second part is about the decadence of the imperial and royal army, which is called k.u.k. monarchy. The status of the army is also discussed in this section. The third part of the study examines the fall of monarchy in the context of metropolitan and provincial. The last section explains how Joseph Roth depicts natural events and relates them to the collapse of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. The most important topics about the decadence are summarized in the last section.
