Abstract
Bu çalışmada İngiltere Büyükelçiliği’nin 25-31 Temmuz 1950 tarihlerinde Çukurova’ya gerçekleştirdiği seyahatin akabinde elçilik görevlilerine hazırlattığı ve Londra’ya sunduğu rapor incelenmiştir. İngilizler tarihsel süreçte Türk şehirleri ile ilgili pek çok rapor kaleme almışlardır. Bu gezilerden biri de büyükelçiliğe ait iki görevli tarafından gerçekleştirilmiştir. Seyahatte Çukurova ziyaret edilerek öncelikle bölgenin tarihî ve coğrafî yapısı hakkında genel bilgiler verilmiştir. Keza bölge hakkında yapılan yorumların yanı sıra iki büyükelçilik görevlisinin ele aldığı her konu ile ilgili ülkenin ve bölgenin geleceğine dair öngörüleri de yer almıştır. İki bölümden oluşan notların ilk kısmında Çukurova’nın tarihi ve coğrafi özelliklerinin yanı sıra işçilerin günlük hayatı ile modern çiftliklere dair izlenimler yer almıştır. İkinci bölümde ise ovada yetişen tarım ürünleri ve bu ürünlerin ekonomik değerleri ile doğal felaketlerin yöre tarımına etkisi üzerinde durulmuştur. Notlar iktidara gelen Demokrat Parti’nin ilk aylarındaki siyasi atmosfer hakkındaki gözlemlerini göstermesi açısından da ilginç tespitler sunmuştur. Çalışmada bölgenin en önemli iktisadi kaynakları olan pamuk, buğday, narenciye üretimi ile sulama, petrol arama çalışmaları ve liman işletmeleri başlıkları altında Çukurova’nın potansiyel verimliliğinin artmasına dönük faaliyetlere değinilmiştir. Çalışmanın ana çerçevesi bu gezi notlarından yola çıkarak genç Cumhuriyetin önemli ekonomik sahalarından olan Çukurova’nın sosyo-ekonomik gelişimini irdeleyerek anlamaya çalışmak ve o dönemi yabancı bir bakış açısıyla ortaya koymaktır. İngiliz arşivlerinde yapılan titiz bir araştırmanın neticesi olan çalışma dönemin büyükelçilik görevlilerinin yaptığı bu ziyaret kapsamında hazırlamış olduğu raporu ele almaktadır.

Abstract
This study examines a report prepared by the British Embassy and submitted to London, following a visit made to Çukurova between July 25-31, 1950. Throughout the history, the British have prepared many reports on Turkish provinces based on their visits. One of those visits was made by two officials of the Embassy. In the report they prepared on their visit to Çukurova, they primarily provide general information about historical and geographical structure of the region. Likewise they express their foresights regarding the future of the country and the region in addition to their comments on other issues. The first part of notes that are composed of two parts embodies impressions about historical and geographical features of Çukurova as well as daily lives of workers and modern farms. The second part dwells on agricultural products grown in the plain, economic value of these products and effects of natural disasters on agricultural activities throughout the region. The notes embody some interesting observations on the political atmosphere during the first few months after Democrat Party came to the power. The study addresses various activities that aim to increase potential productivity of Çukurova under topics of the leading economic resources of the region such as cotton, wheat, citrus fruits, irrigation, oil exploration and port management. Based upon the travel notes provided from a foreigner’s point of view, this study mainly aims at offering an insight into the socio-economic development of the Çukurova region, a leading economic field of the young Republic. Being a result of a detailed research carried on in the British archives, this study analyzes the report on a visit to the region by the embassy officials of the time.
