Abstract

Abstract

The aim of this study is to examine the alternative methods and techniques that are subject to post-graduate studies in the field of Social Studies Education in Turkey between the years 2000-2019 in terms of different variables. Qualitative research method was used in the present study and data were obtained using document analysis. Within the scope of this study, 284 graduate theses on alternative methods and techniques in social studies teaching and with access permission were examined with the review performed in the National Thesis Center database of the Higher Education Council. The obtained data were analyzed using content analysis method. Graduate theses within the scope of the research were categorized according to their methods and techniques, years, graduate levels, universities and institutes, research methods, research designs, data collection tools, sample groups and sample size. The findings are presented in tables by subtracting frequency (f) and percentages (%). As a result of the research, it was seen that the most studied subject in the field of alternative methods and techniques in social studies teaching between 2000-2019 was "teaching social studies with oral and written literature products". It was also found that "computer-assisted social studies teaching" and "social studies teaching with inverted learning" was frequently preferred by researchers in recent years. In addition, it was observed that the examined theses were mostly conducted in 2019. Of the 284 graduate theses examined within the scope of this study, 219 (77%) were found to be master's theses, and 65 (22%) were doctoral dissertations. The examination according to universities and institutes showed that the greatest number of thesis was made in Gazi University, Graduate School of Educational Sciences.
