Abstract

Abstract

This study aims to provide a general framework for the cyanotype printing technique and to examine the application processes and outcomes of cyanotype printing on textile surfaces using an exposure machine with a UVA light source as an alternative to sunlight. The application process of the cyanotype technique, developed by Sir John Frederick William Herschel in 1842, is shaped by numerous parameters, including ambient light conditions, the properties of the water used, the type and structural characteristics of the application surface, as well as the washing and drying conditions and durations. The applicability of this technique to a wide range of surfaces contributes to the expansion of its fields of use. In this study, the process of applying cyanotype printing to textile surfaces through the use of an exposure machine as an alternative to sunlight is examined. Prior to the light exposure stage, a high-quality black-and-white negative of the selected photograph was printed onto acetate. During the exposure process, a screen printing frame covered with silk fabric was placed over the fabric and acetate to ensure proper alignment, prevent shifting, and eliminate gaps. Based on preliminary trials, the exposure time was determined to be 300 seconds. This exposure duration may vary according to designers’ aesthetic preferences. The results of the study suggest that the exposure process can serve as an effective alternative to sunlight, that different visual outcomes can be achieved in a more controlled manner through adjustment of the exposure time, and that designers may create personalized designs by making greater use of the cyanotype printing technique.
