Abstract

This commission was established in order to purchase air tools, equipment (airplane, balloon) and to training. Subsequently, the development process of military aviation showed a parallel evolution with aerial photography for exploration, surveillance and intelligence purposes, as in other countries. Especially during the First World War, the importance of aerial photography and the valuation of air observers were realized. Air observer, aside from taking aerial photograph, is a second pilot to fly the airplane like a pilot. Observing the place from the airplane to explore, to take photographs, to arrange artillery shots, to carry out radio communications and to fire ground targets are the other missions of air observer. The aim of this study is to cover the gap in literature related with this occupation and put forth the importance role of air observer’s facilities by taking aerial photographs and making discoveries in wars. The data related to the research was obtained by means of source scanning method after that analysis and evaluation studies were conducted on the data. The data related to the research was obtained by means of source scanning method after that analysis and evaluation studies were conducted on the data. In this study, the appearance of aerial photography and its functions, also characteristics, upbringing and education processes and then the evolution of the profession in the form of aerial photography are emphasized. As a result, the importance of the profession in the history of military aviation has been revealed and it has been observed that it follows a parallel process with the changing needs and technology. It has been determined how air observer directly affects the outcome of the war, especially with technology and scientific steps taken before and during World War I.
