In this study, it’s been aimed to determine the level of elementary school teachers’ hopelessness and whether the level of hopelessness differ in terms of some personal variables. 117 elementary school teachers who were randomly selected among the elementary school teachers working in the Primary schools in Ardahan participated this research. A scale consisting of two parts has been used to collect the data. The fist part consists of Beck Hopelessness Scale and the second part consists of the General Information Form which was developed by the researchers of this study. Kolmogrov-Simirnov Test has been applied to the data in order to determine the appropriate statistical way to analyze the data which had been collected in this research. According to the test, the data doesn’t have a normal distribution and the statistical analysis can only be done by using nonparametric tests. For that reason, Mann-Whitney U and Kruskal Wallis H Test has been used to analyze the data. According to the data obtained from the study: the level of elementary school teachers’ hopelessness is low. In addition to that, in the analysis of the second part of the scale which consists of General Information Form including the demographic variables of the teachers, it’s been concluded that there is not a statistically significant difference between the demographic variables some of which are the teachers’ gender, marital status, the grade of students they educate, variabilities of their families’ hometown and the level of their hopelessness. However it’s also been concluded that there is a statistically significant difference between the level of their hopelessness and some other demographic variables which are their age, educational level, seniority and the duration of working at the same school.

Ethem Baran who is one of the recent successful story writers, has become a novelist in 2008 with his first novel, named Yarım. This novel which exposes the dark dominance that “12 September” period exerts on people, is a competent oeuvre that can be classified as a psychological novel because it opens up the characters’ psychology profoundly. In this article, the protagonist will be examined through the donnees of the appropriate theories that can be found in “Psychoanalytic Literary Criticism”, which was founded by Sigmund Freud in the 20th century and was developped and extended into different branches later on. First, the protagonist’s state of mind will be determined through the causal connection, always sticking to the novel’s donnees, in the light of the theories that are appropriate for the novel. Psychoanalytic is a science that mentions act of creation and artistry. Especially exhibitting the data based on where Writer's creativity come from, can't be ignored. Yarım's headcharacter is a character that wants to be an artist and also has attempts in this case. Overall the novel consists of his articles as well. Therefore he will be thought as architect of the creation and the source of his creativity will be stated within the framework the data of theory that handled. After that, following the idea of psychoanalytic: “every novel has traces from the novelist in it”, traces from the novelist’s own life will be looked for. Besides all that, a lot of images that the novelist uses to invite the reader to activity from passivity, will be studied to get them deciphered.

The love has been one of the most important themes of the world literature throughout the history. In each period, all literary movements expressed their principles through the love. The works written in the primitive periods of the history are related to the love. In Gilgamesh Epopee known as one of the most ancient works in the history, it was the love which had the hero Gilgamesh rebelled (Duralı 2007). In Iliad which is one of the historical works, Homer relates that the Trojan War occurred due to the love (Homeros 2012). In all the middle age literatures, the adventures of the chevaliers are related to the love. In the following periods, the place that the love occupies in the literature continues exactly in the same way as the preceding periods. The love in the romantic works came out on the apex in the history. For the romantic writers, the indispensable element of their life has been the love and it was the love that gives the form to the life. The independent anarchist sentimentality of Jean Jacques Rousseau (Göker 1982, 26), the theatres related to the love of Shakespeare (Toker 1987, 51–76), the desperation of the young Werther of Goethe (Goethe 2009), the lines filled with passion and melancholic expressions of Alfred de Musset, Gerard de Nerval, Alphonse de Lamartine and other romantic poets (Berk 2001, 111-90), the self-interested philosophy of Stendhal knitted with romantism and love, the religious conception considerably romantic of Chateaubriand, the works related to the praise to the willpower of imagination of Victor Hugo, the musical works of Mozart, Haydn, and Beethoven shaking and confusing the spirit, all these writers gave form to the time where they were living. This fictive world based on the love and sentimentality that the romantic writers presented to their readers caused a lot of irreparable problems in the human spirit. The sentimental love exhibited by the romantics in XIXth century has been transformed in illness of the century (mal du siècle). A lot of melancholic people became types inclinable to the suicide. The fictive and imaginative world stands against the real world. The people having a spirit a little sentimental took the portion from the period where they were living and get stuck between the fictive and imaginative world created by the romantics and the real world where they were living. In this just time Gustave Flaubert comes to the help of people suffocating from this melancholic atmosphere fictively create

In that study, the prospective teachers’ teaching material requirements at the schools when they have just started to work have been analyzed. It has been searched how good the teachers are at using teaching materials although they have just graduated from their universities. The prospective teachers have been asked which tools, sources and methods they use or which of them they do not prefer. They have been asked to determine why they do not prefer using technological products. Although they are new graduates from university, some prospective teachers have stated that they can not use technological tools. Some of these tools were used during classes at universities but they were not able to follow new developments. They sometimes can not find the products they need or they are not allowed to use them although they are available at school.
The current study examines prospective teachers’ summarizing skills at narrative and expository texts. The sampling comprises 200 fourth grader prospective teachers in the programmes of Turkish Language Teaching and Primary School Teaching at the faculties of education of two universities in the provinces of Ankara and Bolu. To realize the aims of the study, two reading texts from the primary school Turkish course books, one being informative and the other narrative, were determined randomly. Prospective teachers were asked to read and summarize these texts in two different class hours. “The Evaluative Scale of Summarized Texts” was used to grade the adequacy levels of the summaries made by the prospective teachers. The data obtained from the grading of the summarized texts were evaluated in terms of the variables of text types, gender, reading habit, following periodicals, ranking preference of the teaching profession, satisfaction from undergraduate education. The results indicate that the prospective Turkish teachers’ summarizing skills in both narrative and informative texts are at midlevel, while those of the Primary School teachers are weak. Generally speaking, it can be said that prospective teachers’ summarizing skills are not at an adequate level. A significant correlation was found to exist between prospective teachers’ summarizing skills and the variables of reading habit, following periodicals, ranking preference of the teaching profession, satisfaction from undergraduate education. No such correlation was observed between their summarizing skills and the variable of gender. These findings indicate that teacher education programmes along with the proficiency levels of prospective teachers need to be revised in higher education.

Since the ancient time China is known as a country of music and ceremonies. The social and educational role of music in Chinese society was very important: it was believed that it helps on the one hand in the country’s management, on the other hand in the people’s education. The cosmological and socio-political understanding of music was typical for the ancient Chinese. It was believed that musical tones correspond to the different elements of the universe and all things interact to each other on the basis of communication, similar to the musical consonances. The oldest musical instruments which were found in China date back to the V-IV millennia BC. They are the various kinds of whistles and bone pipes. Relating to that time the spherical clay ocarinas, lithophones, bronze bells and other musical instruments were found during the archaeological excavations. There are some textual confirms of a significant increase in the number of musical instruments in the Zhou dynasty. A variety of rattles, scrapers, stringed instruments, flutes etc. were indicated.
Global popular culture, nowadays, becomes a field of ideological negotiation and struggle in context of health and beauty. Self and body as a display and a physical expression of self, build an order of discourse by various representation forms. Large number of sectors, mostly health, sports and cosmetics, become the founder sources of a new self and body discourse by putting ‘healthy life’ theme into the center of their fields of activity. In this study; reality, as an order of discourse constructed by fit body which is one of the common prototypes in popular culture, is examined in context of health and beauty discourse. Interpretative repertoires, which mean characteristic language constructs, expression and content patterns, are focused in the analysis. This self and body discourse which is confronted with popular magazines and newspapers is researched through four basic interpretative repertoires: (a) “scientific and rational approach to body”; (b) “body as a potential which is needed to be developed by interventions”; (c) “body as a work place, which needs care”; (d) “happiness and joy orientation”. Each one of the interpretative repertoires is connected with the discourse source, which could be named “healthy life and beauty” presenting explanations of what, why and how must be done to possess healthier and more beautiful body. Self and body discourse is explained and argued through interpretative repertoires in psycho-social and cultural context.

In this research, Karacaoren and Serciler villages from Canakkale province are compared in terms of their speed of social change. Karacaoren village is 4 km. far from the city center and has advanced intercommunication facilities. Serciler village, on the other hand, is 23 km. east of the city center and is far behind Karacaoren village in terms of intercommunication means. What is more, the village of Serciler is lower than Karacaoren village with respect to socio-economic level. Macrocosm of this research is household heads residing for a long time in the villages of Karacaoren and Serciler. By using random sampling method, 85 household heads from Karacaoren as well as 45 household heads from Serciler are interviewed. Frequency tables of the research results are created with the help of SPSS 16.0 program, and these tables are converted into comparative tables in word files. As a result of this research, the following facts are discovered: In Karacaoren village–which is much closer to the city center than Serciler village and is more open to the economic and cultural impact of the city as a result of this closeness–, the social control on worshipping and praying is lower; traditional group solidarity is much lower; social status of women in the family is higher; tolerance towards flirting is much higher; the general attitude supporting the necessity of the families’ decision on their children’s marriage is lower than that of Serciler village. These results support the theoretical and applied researches endorsing that the economic and cultural impacts of the cities accelerate the changes on the traditional structure of villages as well as causing changes on the traditional attitudes of villagers.

Urban policies and urban life is one of the most frequently discussed matters in Turkey’s entry process to European Union. Principally, the policies to be formed by countries , which met the criteria in urban case, are much more easier and realistic in the policies they will form in the other fields. Sustainable urbanization policies may play an important role in the acceleration of economic development in the countries’ processes of stable development, at the same time. Cities should not be seen only as developing physical places. Because, the physical extent of cities are directly related to socio-economic status of the cities. The land-use in the urban lands, the size and quality of these lands effect social life and sustainability in cities. Today, the phenomenon of “sustainable urbanization” is becoming more more important, and it is adopted as a basis. Developed countries consistently develop new policies and implement these policies to have sustainable cities. Considering basic sustainable urban criteria, Turkey must determine prior problems in the urbanization process. To make a better analysis of the cities’ conformity to Europian urban criteria and sustainability in Turkey , it is essential to do comprehensive researches on each problematic side. In recent years, there have been important steps related to ubanization policies. However, there are only a few studies that have focused on the current situation of cities. In this study, it was tried to determine the sustainability levels of some selected cities according to some geographical indicators. To geographical indicators, Ankara, Edirne, İstanbul, İzmir are the cities which have the best sustainability levels. To education indicater, the other indicator group, Trabzon, Konya, Erzurum, Ankara come to the front. When indicators are wholly analyzed, Edirne, İzmit, Ankara, Zonguldak are the cities which have the highest sustainibility while Kars, Diyarbakır and Siirt are the cities which have the lowest sustainibility.

THE ‘NEW HUMAN’ TYPE IN THE WORKS OF NAMIK KEMÂL AS THE CREATOR OF IDEAL CHARACTERS

Namık Kemâl is one of the pioneering authors of the ‘Tanzimat’ Reform Era when the Ottoman Empire underwent drastic changes in all respects and his main concern in his poetry, novels and plays is to create a ‘human type’ different from the ones in the preceding periods. The characteristics of this “new human” involve a national awareness, patriotism, liberty, fairness, honesty and standing against injustice. For the author, it is becoming of a man to live with honor and dignity, with loyalty to his country and without surrendering inferiority complex in this transient world. Therefore in his works he adorns his characters with these noble traits with an aim to make the reader adopt the idea. Deploying his characters on opposite poles, Namık Kemâl manipulates the reader by presenting ideal stereotypes against those who have bad traits and are notorious for their immorality. The ideal stereotypes are generally courageous men with a mission who embrace the Turkish and Islamic history and culture and who are engaged in a cause for their country and nation. This “new human” type also serves the function of giving society messages that are in compliance with the principles and general aims of ‘Tanzimat Literature’. This human type rejects scholastic thought and adopts an approach of struggle the source of which is human reason and will. These characters are not only sensitive and responsive to social problems but also faithful to their beloved ones. For the author, it is only possible to change the society by changing one’s his own attitudes first. This approach introduces the reader an active human model who, rather than adopting a fatalistic understanding, develops his own philosophy of life. Namık Kemâl tries to impose the worldview he declares in his articles to the reader through incidents and events his fictional protagonists go through. Although Namık Kemâl presents his ideas in his poetry and novels with an attempt to convey his message, he thinks that authors should focus on theatre as it is the most effective and perpetual means to this end. The aim of this study is to research Namık Kemâl’s intellectual world based on the characters in his novels and plays.
