The aim of the present study is to examine the validity and reliability of the Turkish Version of the Academic Majors Scale (Nauta, 2007). Participants were 302 university students. Primarily the Academic Majors Satisfaction Scale was translated into Turkish. The Turkish form was back-translated into English and the consistency between the Turkish and English forms was examined. Finally they discussed the Turkish form and along with some corrections the scale was prepared for validity and reliability analyses. Academic Majors Satisfaction Scale was used as data collecting method in the research. The scale contains 6 items (e.g., “I feel good about the major I’ve selected.”) with each item rated on a 5-point Likert-type scale. Participants voluntarily participated in research. Completion of the scales was anonymous and there was a guarantee of confidentiality. The scales were administered to the students in groups in the classrooms. Prior to administration of measures, all participants were told about purposes of the study. In this study, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was executed to confirm the original scale’s structure in Turkish culture. As reliability analysis Cronbach alpha internal consistency coefficients and the item-total correlations were calculated. Data were analyzed using LISREL 8.54 and SPSS 20.0 package programs. CFA provide empirical-based evidence for determining whether the Turkish version of Academic Majors Satisfaction Scale would yield or construct a similar structure to the original version of Academic Majors Satisfaction Scale. Results of confirmatory factor analysis demonstrated that the six items yielded one factor and the uni-dimensional model was well fit (x²= 4.61, df= 8, RMSEA= 0.000, CFI= 1.00, IFI= 1.00, SRMR= .015). Cronbach alpha internal consistency reliability coefficient was .86 for scale. Corrected item-total correlations ranged from .45 to .77. These findings demonstrate that this scale is a valid and reliable instrument.

Population movements which occur depending on forced migration, force the people to change their socialties, conversion of social relations and continuity of cultural values. Despite the fact that life style and behavior pattern are intrinsic to society, ethnic identification is carried on as migrating and the minority is in conflict between own culture and foreign culture. As a consequence of being in conflict, the conventional structure of the society that keeps the people in unity become distinct customs, beliefs and ethos. This sociological case which depends on alteration also causes cultural conflict between the family members. The cultural conflict that occurs in the society because of living together not only a sociological matter but also is frequently taken into consideration in literature and it’s the main subject of Amy Tan’s novels. Tan whose family is expatriated feels a lot of cultural problems. She dwells on causes and effects of these problems feminizing multiple sizes in her works. This article argues that Tan who handles position of this ethnic group in American society, identity crisis encountered, cultural conflicts and belonging problems in the route of women and how she reveals the cultural conflict in The Joy Luck Club. Besides cultural conflict encountered, it is dwelled on women’s struggles when they recall own cultural features.

This treatise is an introduction to the Cox Proportional Hazards technique for researchers who want to use in social science. It brings a new approach and method for researchers. This technique provides a statistical model for survival analysis. This statistical model can be used to explore the effect of several variables upon the time a specific event takes to occur. In addition, this model assists the researcher in making predictions about the effect of the treatment and the risk on the sample. Cox Proportional Hazards models are similar to logistic regression models as it is addressing the probability of survival. The interpretation of Cox regression’s statistic outputs is also similar to logistic regression models. The Cox regression can be attained in many statistical software applications. This paper applies the Cox regression model to the data set from the 1996 GSS on breast cancer, in order to demonstrate how it is used and interpreted. For the purposes of this paper, the Cox regression model includes estrogen reception, age, positive auxiliary lymph nodes and pathological tumor size (cm). I also discuss the assumptions that must be met in order to use this statistical method.

Although it is thought that the cold war between The USA and USSR ended in 1990s with the collapse of communism, history repeats itself and we witness that it continues in 2000s where it left. The analysts from the USA knew that Russia would regain its strength, object to the one pole hegemony system of the USA and make a big effort to be a leading power in international system rather than a leaded one. In accordance with the USA predictions, Russia gathered strength by performing economic and political improvement between 1990-2000. Since beginning of 2000’s, Russia argued against US operation towards Afghanistan and Iraq and Russia said no to the USA centered one pole world system and US progression with its attitude towards revolutions in region after 2003, and prospective NATO/EU membership of Georgia and Ukraine in 2008 and later. In a Ukraine-centered and Cyprus-related crisis in November 2013, Russia came to realize that The West desires to surround itself and restrict its authority. Possessing serious concern about deepening relationship of Ukraine with EU, its probable NATO membership, Russia at first occupied a place which has great strategic importance and intense Russian minority population, in other words Russia prompted Russian citizens and soldiers and occupied Crimea, subsequently annexed it in a way that international law wouldn’t allow. This study attempts to analyse the process which started with Ukraine-centered event and continued with annexation of Crimea, investigate the roles the USA and Russia play in crisis process and dissertations about annexation of Crimea, and subsequently discuss whether Russian annexation of Ukraine-controlled Autonomous Republic of Crimea is appropriate in terms of international law. Also in this analysis, it is attempted to answer the questions like “What does self-determination mean and in what conditions it is applied?, Is it appropriate in terms of international law that Crimea declares its independency and gets under control of Russia by attributing it to self-determination policy?, Why did Crimea become the centre of crisis?, What is strategic importance of Crimea for Russia and what is redline of Russia in region?.

The aim of this article is to examine the purpose, forms and effects of the usage of supernatural folkloric material such as fortune-telling, magic and mediumship, called superstition, in the works of Nazlı Eray who is known for her extraordinary fictions. Superstition points into an illogical unreal domain and therefore is used frequently in the fantastic and magical realist narratives. In particular, superstition and false beliefs are important in the Latin American magical realism. While Nazlı Eray describes her own narrative style as magical realism, superstition is used in her texts in a different way than in the Latin American magical realist texts. Following an introduction of the genre of magical realism, this article attempts to explain the relation between Nazlı Eray’s narratives and magical realist texts. Then, it proposes that in contrast to the way superstition is used in the Latin American magical realists texts, such motifs have a fictional function in Nazlı Eray’s narratives. It is illustrated with examples that the primary function of the motif of superstition in the fantastic worlds invented by Nazlı Eray is to enable the transition from natural to supernatural. Furthermore, it is observed that these motifs gain a second functionality as the social hierarchy is broken thanks to such transitions bringing the discourses of various social circles and classes together on the same platform. At this point, when discussing the functional values of superstition within these narratives, the article draws upon the main concepts in Bakhtin’s theory of novel, such as carnivalization and chronotope. Eray creates carnivalesque environments in her narratives by juxtaposing

The land of Cyprus features identities and cultures that have intermixed for centuries. Turkish Cypriots remain one of the oldest communities on the island. After the reign of the Ottoman Empire starting in 1571, the island was ceded to Britain and placed under colonial administration. Both the British rule and the growing conflicts with the Greeks accelerated the process of identity formation of Turkish Cypriots as well as their struggle during the colonial administration. Literature became one of the most crucial instruments for the people in forming and maintaining their identity during the period of struggle growing within political and social spheres. While poets and writers dynamically influenced the people during this time, they in turn were also influenced by the conditions of this period. In their works, they depicted the conditions and circumstances of Turkish Cypriots through their eyes. The most profound period of Turkish Cypriot literature emerged during the 1950s, wherein the Turkish Cypriot, Suleyman Ali Ulucamgil, a prominent poet of the time, deserves special attention for his major contributions. The purpose of this study is to highlight the significance of Suleyman Ali Ulucamgil, whose works strongly contributed to the formation of identity in Cyprus. Despite his young age, the poet’s dynamic voice became a subject of identity analysis of Turkish Cypriots with the works he produced. Another purpose of this study is to underline the necessity of analyzing literature as well as other fields for their roles in political, cultural and social identity formations. This study will be conducted using descriptive and analytical methods and the data will be interpreted through process/situation analysis.

Earthquake is one of the forces of nature which leads to loss of life and property and cannot be predicted beforehand. Half of the Turkish territory is in the first-degree zone and 44% of the population lives in this zone. Inappropriate area selection for settlement may turn earthquake, an ordinary natural force, into a catastrophe. The quality and scope of the studies carried out at the present time have been increasing. The present studies have mostly been carried out using Geographic Information Systems (GIS). In this research it is aimed to realize the earthquake sensitivity analysis of Gallipoli Peninsula using Geographic Information Systems (GIS) and Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP). Firstly, the earthquake risk of the zone has been disclosed. Afterwards, the other factors affecting earthquake sensitivity such as lithology, distance to fault line, the largest ground acceleration, hydrogeology, geographical formations, slopes and distance to rivers have been determined and their effect on the earthquake risk and sensitivity. The factors affecting earthquake sensitivity have been determined by classifying the studies and data concerning earthquakes. Various data obtained from different studies have been used in order to form the factor map. The formation of factor maps and image analyses have been carried out using ArcGIS / ArcMap 10.2 package programs. It has been found that the earthquake sensitivity in Gallipolis peninsula is high as 82,2 % (774,0 km²) of the territory. It can be concluded that the region is partially appropriate for settlement. It is thought that Gallipolis peninsula will become a center of attraction after the completion of Gallipoli Strait Bridge, which is to be finished in 2023. It is necessary to take the results of this study into consideration while deciding new settlement places in The Gallipolis peninsula, which is thought to have some changes in its social-economic status and population in the near future. ın order to minimize the loss of life and property during a probable earthquake the development of the settlement should be directed to areas with lower and middle sensitivity of earthquake. By the same token, the same case situation has been emphasized in the studies carried out for the region of Marmara. Therefore, more detailed application studies are needed. In the existing land use where the earthquake sensitivity is high necessary measure should be taken. The earthquake resistance analyses should be made for t

The aim of this research is to make a validity and realibity study on university students through Career Decision Inventory which was developed for high school students by Çakır in 2003. In the ligt of this aim, with the data which has been obtained from the first group consisting of 402 university student exploratory factor analysis has been made in the first place and afterwards verifying factor analysis, it has been mad efor the same data. As a result of the analysis, it has been seen that the scale with 20 items has showen a 4 factor structure and these 4 factors can be interpreted. It has olsa been seen that the total variance is 54.295%. The cronbach alpha internal consistency parameter which has been obtained for the total of the scale has been calcualted as .90.When the coherence index of the model which was tested through DFA was examined, it was seen that the value of Ki Square (X2 = 393.21, df= 164, p=.00) had a value to good coherence. Considering the DFA result, the coherence indexes of the model are RMSEA = 0.059, GFI= .91, AGFI= 0.89, CFI=0.95, NNFI= 0.94, and SRMR= 0.057. Internal consistency reliability was assessed by computing cronbah’s alfa coefficients fort his administared to the 402 participants. The resulting coefficients were .87. The scale was administrated to 35 students from Mehmet Akif Ersoy Üniversity twice, in order to acquire test-re-test reliability. The time interval between the two administrations were twenty days. Test-re-test reliability coefficienty was .84. The findings which have been obtained show that the scale is valid and realiable. The obtained findings have been discussed in the content of related the field of literature.

In the Quran and hadith narratives, there appear attributes such as vach, yad, istiwa, kadam, ityân, sâk, ru’yah which are named as allegorical (mutashabih) or informative (khabari). The approaches of scholars and sects to these attributes differ according to their social, political, theological etc. situations. These approaches also interact with each other. Some accept these attributes without any interpretation or refer their meanings to Allah andbelieve that only Allah acquaints with them, while the other scholars and sects interpret them, using the method of ta’wil. In this paper, we will endeavor to determine the approach of Ibnu’l-Mulakkın to this topic in the framework of his commentary work ‘Et-Tavdîh li-şerhi’l-Câmii’s-Sahîh’ on Bukhari’s ‘el-Câmiü’s-Sahîh’.

There have been a number of studies on the content of the news in the media and their impacts on society until now. The relationship between media and fear of crime is among the new issues added to these researches. Fear of crime is a contemporary social problem which modern societies face with. The concept can be defined as an anticipation of being victim of any crime. Primarily an area of interest in criminology, fear of crime has been analysed by many disciplines in social sciences. Fear of crime can be explained theories including personal and environmental factors that generate fear of victimization. In this context; Vulnerability Theory, Victimization Theory, Disorganization Theory and Community Concern Perspective are used to reveal dynamics of fear of crime. The impact of the media is discussed mainly on the basis of Victimization Theory which claims that crimes on television news and newspapers cause indirect victimization that increases fear of crime. In the light of explanations above, this study aims to analyze the relationship between media and fear of crime. The research was conducted with 35 female students studying in different departments in the Faculty of Arts in Cumhuriyet University. A qualitative research technique was used to explore the impact of crime news in media on women. The findings obtained in this study supported the idea that higher media exposure to crime raises women’s fear of crime. Especially the news about violence against women affects women negatively. Thus, they should take various measures not to be a victim of crime.

This article takes as a subject matter the fictionalisation and the presentation of the female body as a sexual commodity in the consumption culture. In the understanding of the beauty and the standardized body envisaged for the female body by the consumer culture, the female body is being presented as a sexually attractive body, the visuality of which is in the foreground.

In this article, tradition is taken as a transition of past, ‘past that has been transited’ is being traditionalized with the narrative activity that depends on the repetition between generations. The subject of past being transited, is taken as a ‘memory’ issue by various opinions is not explained sufficiently in terms of oral culture. However, instead, we can mention about traditionalizing by a ritualistic narrative that is based on impersonation. From this view point, past, no matter how it is being thought as a mere ‘memory’ concept, it contains a cause of “reminding”, can be seen as an attempt of narrative impersonating the past in order to transit to next generations. Traditionalizing the past with a narrative can be possible with repetition. Repetition, attempts the narratives that’s part of the oral culture such as folktale, ballad, epic, epos etc. impersonate ritualistically to re-temporal the past in the present and allows it to inherit as a heritage of the former generation. In summary narrative, draws out the past from being only a “memory” context and prevents the past being forgotten with re-experiencing a lively “performance”.

The scale contains 10 with each item rated on a 6-point Likert-type scale. Participants voluntarily participated in research. The sample of study consists of 200 teachers work in İstanbul. Primarily the BAS was translated into Turkish by three academicians from English Language and Literature department. The Turkish form was back-translated into English and the consistency between the Turkish and English forms was examined. Then Turkish form has been reviewed by two academicians from educational sciences department. Finally they discussed the Turkish form and along with some corrections the scale was prepared for validity and reliability analyses. In this study, confirmatory factor analysis (CFA) was executed to confirm the original scale’s structure in Turkish culture. As reliability analysis Cronbach alpha internal consistency coefficients and the item-total correlations were calculated. Data were analyzed using SPSS 13.0 and LISREL 8.54 package programs. Fit index values of the model were: RMSEA=.077, NFI=.92, CFI=.95, IFI=.95, GFI=.93. The internal consistency reliability coefficient of the scale was found as .88. Also the corrected item-total correlations ranged from .31 to .76. Overall findings demonstrated that this scale had high validity and reliability scores and that it may be used as a valid and reliable instrument in order to assess body appreciation levels of in
