SANATÇI THEASTER GATES’İN AFRO-AMERİKAN NEGATİF AYRIMCILIĞINA MULTİDİSİPLİNER VE METAFORİK BAŞKALDIRIŞLARI

Abstract
İnsanın kişiliğini genetik özelliklerine ek olarak doğası, tarihi, kültürü, özetle topyekûn çevresinin oluşturduğu/biçimlendirdiği varsayılmaktadır. Bu belirleyici etmenler sanatçının, sanatçı kişiliğini de biçimlendirir. Sanat yapıtı sanatçının, hayal gücü tarafından tasarlanarak uygulamasıyla somutlaşır. Eserleriyle sanatçının ismini kitlelere duyurmasından, kendi kültürünü tüm dünyaya duyurmasına kadar geniş bir yelpazede sanatın aracı bir yönü vardır. Tasarlayan ve yapıt olarak somutlaştıran sanatçı, kişiliğinin yansımalarını ya da toplumunun yansımalarını bir iletişim aracı olarak geniş kitlelere duyurur. Bazı sanatçılar vardır ki sadece kendi toplumunun gerçekçiliğini dışa vurarak bunu diğer topluluklara duyurmakla kalmaz, bununda ötesine geçerek sanatından sağladığı maddi güç ile kendi toplumunda da pozitif değişiklikler yaratmaya çalışır. Bu bağlamda sanatçı esere şekil verebildiği gibi topluma da şekil verebilir. Bu sanatçılardan biri de Theaster Gates’dir. Bu araştırmanın amacı, seramik, geri dönüşüm, enstalasyon ve performans sanatçısı, aynı zamanda bir şehir planlamacısı olan, Theaster Gates’in yapıtlarını ve Dorchester Projesini analiz ederek, sanatçının büyüdüğü kültürel, çevresel ortam üzerinde yaptığı pozitif değişiklikleri ve içinde bulunduğu toplumun yaşadıklarını, protest bir şekilde sanat diliyle hicvederek yapıtlarına nasıl yansıttığını anlatabilmektir. Bu araştırmada çok yönlü Theaster Gates’in Dorchester Projeleri ile kendi kültürüne ait insanları nasıl bir araya getirdiği ve bu kültürü dalga dalga genişleterek sanat dünyasında nasıl ses getirdiği incelenecektir. Araştırma bulguları doğrultusunda, sanatçının bulunduğu çevreyi nasıl sanat komününe çevirdiğine, siyahi kimliğini metaforlarla nasıl yansıttığına, işlerinde geçmişten bugüne sisteme ve günümüz kısır siyahi sanatında nasıl bir sinerji oluşturmaya çalıştığına yoğunlaşılmıştır. Sanatçının eserlerinin öz’de yer alan kavramları analiz edilerek, insani yönünün sanat yapıtına ve değiştirmeye çalıştığı topluma yansımaları ortaya konmaya çalışılmıştır. Bu çalışma Theaster Gates’in bulunduğu konuma gelene kadar izlediği yollar ile sanat yoluyla kitleleri nasıl bir araya getirdiğinin bir yöntem analizidir. Araştırmada “literatür tarama” ve “eser analizi” yöntem olarak seçilmiştir. Araştırma sanatçının Yangın Hortumları ve Dorchester Projesi ile sınırlıdır. Theaster Gates sanatında zenci insanların kölelikten özgürlüklerini kazanana kadar olan zorlu süreçte karşılaştığı çile ve sıkıntıları metaforik bir dille anlatmaktadır. Onu, çağdaşı olan az sayıdaki diğer siyahi sanatçıdan ayıran, eserlerin sunumunda kullandığı multidisipliner yaklaşımıdır. Onu farklı kılan özelliği, bütünü oluşturan ve her biri ayrı bir sanat dalı olan bu disiplinlerin, kimi zaman şiir kısmında şair, müzik kısmında besteci ya da seslendiren, kimi zaman da kendi eserlerinden oluşturduğu enstalasyonları ya da performansları videoyla yansıtan bir yönetmen olması ve bu disiplinlerin hepsinde de profesyonel bir etki yaratmasıdır. Yani içerikteki multidisiplinlerin her bir alanında Gates’in profesyonel olarak sesi ve imzası vardır. Üstelik tek fark da bu değildir. Gates sanatını yaparken kendi kitlelerini de bir araya getirir. Dünyanın her yerindeki zencileri ortak ülkünün bir parçası olarak kendilerini geliştirme yolunda hem güdüler, hem de harekete geçirir.

Abstract
It is assumed that human's personality, nature, history, culture, in brief, constitute / shape the total environment. These determining factors also shape the personality of the artist. The work of art becomes concrete with its application designed and imagined by the artist. From the announcement of the artist's name to the masses through his works, to announce his own culture to the world, art has a mediator aspect. The artist announces the reflections of his personality or the reflections of his society to large audiences as a means of communication. Some artists try to create positive changes in their own society with the financial power they provide from their art. In this context, the artist can shape the work as well as shape the society. One of these artists is Theaster Gates. The purpose of this research is to examine the works of the versatile artist Theaster Gates and the Dorchester Projects. Our aim is to explain the positive changes that the artist has made on his environment and how his society reflects his works in a protest way. This study will examine how Theaster Gates brought together people from his own culture with Dorchester Projects and how they made a sound impression in the art world. In line with the findings of the research, it was focused on how the artist turned the environment in which he was located into an art commune and what kind of synergy he tried to create in the vicious black art of the past. By examining the concepts in the artist's works, the reflections of his human aspect to the artwork and the society he attempted to change were revealed. This study is a method analysis of how Theaster Gates united the masses through the paths he followed until he reached his location. In the research, "literature review" and "artwork analysis" were chosen as methods. The research is limited to the artist's Fire hoses and Dorchester Project. In the art of Theaster Gates, it describes metaphorically the ordeal and suffering faced by black people from slavery to their freedom. The feature that distinguishes it from the few other black artists who are its contemporaries and even from all known artists is its multidisciplinary approach used in the presentation of the works. The artist is a poet in the poetry part of the work, a composer in the music part or a director who reflects the installations or performances by video. He has a professional influence in all these disciplines. Moreover, this is not the only difference. Gates brings together his own masses as he makes his art. It stimulates black people all over the world to develop themselves as part of their partner country.
