Abstract

Death and the life after death is a subject occupying the human mind after being sent to the earth. The books of religion have carefully focused on the subject of death. As well as philosophers, poets have discussed this issue in their works. They have stated their feelings and thoughts on various occasions. The subject of death in Modern Turkish Literature is one of the most stated issues in poetry. Recaizâde Mahmut Ekrem deals with the subject within the framework of his son’s death. The theme of death enters to our poetry as a philosophical stance with Abdülhak Hamit Tarhan. It is discussed as being the start of eternal life at the art of poems of poets like Necip Fazıl. Yahya Kemal approaches this matter like Mevlana. He eternalizes it in verses of his poem as being “ beautiful tranquil spring country.” Eventually, death is shaped in the hands of some poets as an aesthetic property. On the other hand, some poets see forgetting it as one and only port of refuge since it drops shadows to the joy of life. Mehmed Gönenç is known by his poety books Begonyam published in 1995 and Omelas in 2000. Death is one of the leading issues in his poems. Being from the southeastern part of Turkey, his concern to death could be realated to socio-political and socio-psychological atmosphere in his term. The aim of our work is to put forth the thoughts of Mehmed Gönenç about the subject of death in his poems with a wide perspective.
