Abstract

In this study, a reliable and valid likert-scale model was aimed to develop for determining the health knowledgeand skills of 4th grade primary school students. For this purpose, after reviewing the relavant literature and created a draft 32-item scale, first, this draft was applied to 51-primary school students. Then, it was applied to 202-4th grade students of the Mehmetcik Primary School, who were the members of the study group of this scale study. The validity and reliability of the study was calculated through the data obtained from the application. Exploratory factor analysis, Cronbach's alpha coefficient, Pearson Product Moment Correlation Coefficient were used to analyze the scale data. The content validity was performed according to expert opinion and construct validity was performed through factor analysis. As a result of the content validity and construct validity, 10 items were removed from the scale, thus the Health Knowledge and Skills Determination Scale (HKSDS) with 22 items was created. HKSDS’s Kaiser-Meyer-Olkin value was found .85 whereas the significance value of the Bartlett's test was .00. HKSDS’s load values ranges between .39 and .83, and explain 53% of the total variance. As a result of the varimax rotation technique, it was found that HKSDS was consisted of four factors (personal care skills, health nutrition dimension, negative attitudes and awareness dimensions). For the entire scale, Cronbach's alpha reliability coefficient was found to be .89. It can be said that HKSDS is valid and reliable.
