Abstract

This study seeks to give insight upon the steps taken in Albania in terms of schooling in the context of the dissemination of education to the governments formed after the declaration of Second Constitution through the Ottoman press of that period. To this end, newspapers with wide circulation in that period, which are İkdam, Sabah, Tanin, Tasvir-I Efkar, and Yeni Gazete, were reviewed. Hence, the media reflections of the attempts made by the governments of that period were tried to be revealed. As matter of fact, the reviews made on the columns in the newspapers indicated that the newly-formed governments sped up schooling attempts in the regions where mostly Albanians lived following the declaration of Second Constitution. In this sense, it was seen that while decisions were being made to open new schools in the region, there were many others either newly-opened or with foundations laid. Moreover, it was understood that not only government but also the people in the region involved in schooling. Sensitive towards the dissemination of education, the people in the region came together due to the fact that lack of education can be eliminated via the newly-opened schools, and opened new schools in their regions by acting collaboratively and in solidarity. The government was not indifferent to the attempts of the people in the region. Hence, the government helped their attempts financially. As it is evident from the news in the press, the schooling attempts of the government in that period were not only limited to the construction of schools. The relevant ministry tried to meet the demand for teachers in the region via the newspaper advertisements. The constitutional governments, which spent much effort for school buildings and quality teachers, supported the schools in the region in terms of books, notebooks, and stationary materials as well. All of these have shown that there was an effort on the dissemination of schools in Albania after the declaration of the Second Constitution, and the press, which has an important role as a means of public opinion, carried out the tasks of informing and enlightening the public by bringing such news to the pages of the newspapers.
