Abstract

Aging is one of the most natural stages of human life. However, its importance began to be realized especially since the last few centuries. The reflections of technological developments on modern medical science, in this context, the development of new treatment methods, vaccines found for deadly diseases,significant improvements in health care led to extend the average human lifespan.Especially in the developed countries, the lengthening of the average human lifespan in the world, the increasing number of elderly in the communities led to the loss of value of old age in the past relatively, today, old age began to be seen as a problem rather than a value. Old age is a special period that both physical and mental abilities start slowing. In this period increases occur in losses. At the same time, this period expresses that the end of the life is approaching. From this point,many branches of science, particularly health and medical science are concerned with aging. The medical science involved with aging directly is Geriatrics. However, sciences such as Gerontology, Gerontosociology, Gerontoeconomy and so on. try to evaluate different aspects of old age. But old age is not only an issue that modern science gives importance to it merely. Old age has been a phenomenon and a reality that so many doctrines from mythology to tradition and religions emphasis on it momentously. In this study, phenomenon of old age changing from past to present and evaluations of Islam about old age will attempt to handle Sociologically. In this way, it is aimed to demonstrate that the place and importance of old age in Islam and the perspective of Islam on old age seen as a problematic case in the world of today.
