Abstract

New media is a medium mediating information instantaneously and rapidly to huge masses. In this study, the role of a technical tool in conflict resolution is emphasized by evaluating current news that emanated from new media in conflict zones. Approaches handling new media usage in conflict situations are also examined in a comperative manner in this study. Investigating new media position which mediates conflict relations between parties is the basic problematic of this study. In conflict resolution approaches, new media effects are discussed and besides, new communication technologies are seen as a factor determinating social changes and the process of conflicts. In these approaches, new media is considered as a technological innovation, but capital accumulation and relations of production are not explained. On the other hand, structural determiners such as political economic system, international institutions, states and other actors, which have a potential to end conflicts, are disregarded. The aim of the study is to reveal the role of conflict resolution of new media and investigate the news flow being spread from conflict zones as in Syrian Conflict. The new media usage of online news accounts in Twitter are examined with content analysis. In this regard, 4 online news accounts on Twitter (@AliyeHaber, @suriyegercekh, @ShaamNetworkTR, @SuriyeHbrAjansi) conveying conflicts from Syria are chosen as a sample according to their ideological views. The scope of the study is limited within a month’s period. News accounts are analysed with quantitative datas and also viewed with a qualitative evaluation. As a consequence, instantaneous developments, occured in conflict zones, can be quickly transmitted thanks to new media opportunities. News that are deployed from new media are used for manufacturing public opinion and justifying their political views and demands by all parties.
