Abstract

The appearance of and some definitions of modernism, which had a lot of definitions concerning what it was, were scrutinised in this work, despite the fact that it arose several centuries ago. The term ‘modern’ used in several fields in life has been utilised by artists, authors and philosophers from different perspectives. Hence, a variety of modernism’s definitions and views concerning these definitions were analysed in the examples in this work. Moreover, modernism was reviewed in terms of technological aspect besides its definitions in philosophical dimension. Modernism, which arose with the Enlightenment and improved in the Industrial Evolution, acquired a different dimension with the technological developments in the field of art in the 20th century. New manufacturing types in several fields arose with the thoughts expressed liberally within this period. Not only modernism did major alterations cause in art field but it also caused major changes in every field of society. These alterations were seen in several terms such as varieties in the field of science by broadening the limits of the term concerning freedom, output growth in masterpieces by using the technology and generated terminologies such as right, freedom, justice, equality in the movements of thought. The development of freedom of thought in society caused in creating a superior culture which was comprised of a group of premium people. Modernism also caused an innovative production concept based on the technological developments. This innovative concept occurred in arising from individual differences in artistic production. The masterpiece which became easily accessible lost its own significance because of the mass production in the result of the technological developments. In this work, the definition of the term of modern is based on the alternations which it arose with artistic and social developments.
