Abstract

The subject of this scientific research article is the cradle art in Kahramanmaraş handicrafts. Cradle has been used throughout history in Central Asia and Europe. It continued to be used both in the Islamic world and in the Seljuk and Ottoman periods. Cradle, which is a common usage area in Anatolia, is also used today in wooden carving art products in Kahramanmaras. Crafts are symbols of a nation's culture. Handicrafts, one of the elements that symbolizes Turkish culture, play an important role in the development and transfer of traditions, traditions and lifestyles from generation to generation. With a rich culture, the Turkish cradle is one of the wood handicraft products. It is one of the most reliable places for the Mother; it is also a comfortable resting place for the baby. It is also important in terms of being portable and usable. On 4 May 2018, Fatih Akkök, the wood carving Master, was invited to the workshop in Kahramanmaraş industrial zone; the work was discussed personally and detailed information was obtained on the construction of a crib. In this study, the importance of cradle with the definition of cradle, cradle history, materials used in construction, tools, construction stages, decoration and composition features will be discussed, the science world will be tried to be introduced. Unfortunately, the number of masters who continue the art of making a cradle, which is one of the most beautiful of our traditional handicrafts, is very few, dating back thousands of years. The most important reason for this is the inability to find the apprentice who can continue the profession in the field of handcrafts maintained by the master-apprentice relationship. I believe that the art that has to be destroyed must be developed and maintained.
