This depression which constitutes our area of study is in the northeast of Bingöl, in the west of the area where the NAF,EAF and Varto Faultlines have been intersected. At the same time, these faultlines that forms the Karlıova Triple Junction have got a crucial effect in the neo-tectonic development of our country. Karlıova Basin is a fault wedge basin splitted between the right-lateral strike-slip NAF and the left-lateral strike-slip EAF geologically. The secondary faultlines, which were formed depending upon the movements of main faultlines, have also got an important effect on the development of the basin. The right-lateral strike-slip faults are Bahçeköy, Toklular and Yorgançayır-Kaynarca Faultlines. The High plateau flats that were not splitted much were seen on the mountains surrounded Karlıova Basin (except the mountanious area in the north). There exists important problems originated from geologic and geomorphologic characteristics in the Basin. The important problems originated from the natural environment in the basin and its surrounding area are earthquakes, movements of masses, erosion, avalanche and floods. These problems occur depending upon the faultlines which plays an important role in the formation of the basin, lithology, and the climate. The main factor that constitutes these problems is the tectonism and the characteristics the area of study has gained depending upon this. The first of these characteristics are the high values of slope. The earthquake risk is high in the settlements built on the river valleys, alluvial grounds, and the faultlines. Karlıova town center, Çatak, Kargapazarı, and Ilıpınar villages are the main examples of those settlements. Landslides along the fault scarps and avalanche happened in winter. There is a high risk of landslides in the villages like Ciligöl, Kalencik, Kıraçtepe, Kargapazarı that founded in Göynük Valley. Avalanche that threat the settlements occur in Sakaören, Kıraçtepe, Kantarkaya and Kargapazarı villages. Erosion has reached a significant level in the north and northwest of the basin. Floods occurred in villages like Hasanova, Çatak ve Boncukgöze.
