Abstract

The aim of this research is to determine the children of pre-diagnosis general developmental characteristics with opinions of the mothers of children with specific learning difficulties. In line with this aim, interviews were held with fifteen volunteer mothers who had children with specific learning disabilities in the special education institution in Ankara. In order to obtain appropriate data for reaching the aim of the research, interview method was chosen from qualitative research methods and data were collected through the 'Semi-structured Interview Form' developed by the researcher. Interviews were conducted by asking questions and recording responses by voice recording. The interviews with the mothers lasted approximately twenty minutes and the recorded data were analyzed and correlated with the themes containing the development areas. As a result of this study, it was determined that learning difficulties had many developmental risk indications observed from mothers in the pre-school period. It is remarkable that these statements are mostly related to the field of language and social-emotional development. In addition, mothers often stated that their children had been experiencing failures such as verbal and nonverbal communication, developing and maintaining friendship. This is followed by difficulties in motor skills, self-care skills, and cognitive skills problems. It is mention that these statements by mothers, are supported in the early period and that the necessary intervention can reduce the possibility of children being diagnosed with learning difficulties. It can be argued that children with special learning difficulties will form the future issues of learning difficulties of early intervention options, given the signs of early childhood and the inadequacy of this turnover approach.
